CHAPTER TWELVE

Steinnback didn’t look much different from the tougher, tighter rings in the universe. It and Lundahn might have been twins if rings ever had a notion like that.

Nothing appeared out of the ordinary. If she’d walked from her home to Steinnback, she wouldn’t have known the difference.

“Got us a spot waiting on the docks,” Dag announced while they approached. “Nothing looks like it followed us here.”

“Appearances can be deceiving.” Madison called her helmsman over and crossed her arms while they approached. “I don’t want anyone off the ship who can’t be returned to it in a moment’s notice. If the navy, Guilds, or anyone else gets a bead on us, we’re going to bug out of here faster than any of us likes. Do we need anything specific?”

Dag shrugged. “Not particularly. We can figure out the details of the ships we’re looking for with a quick plug into the docks.”

Madison sighed and nodded. “Keep an eye out. Nimmes and I will find a place nearby for Leopold to do his dangerous work where he won’t blow the Rose to splinters. It’s the best we can do.”

He nodded. “I know I voiced concerns, but I don’t mind if we let the man do his work on board.”

“This isn’t the area for the people hunting us,” Madison noted. “We’re being overly cautious. I’d rather have a ship to return to than try running from the people after us without a ship.”

“Agreed.”

Madison waved to Nimmes to tell him they were ready to head out. He tapped his belt to make sure he was armed and ready for a fight if something came along. She didn’t like the idea of fighting on the one ring that wasn’t crawling with navy.

It wasn’t exactly like they could help it, though. The best they could do was make sure they were ready to push those with weak hearts away from the idea of a quick buck from their bodies.

“You and Ed are coming on this one.” Madison motioned for the pirate to join them. “I need as much muscle around Leopold as we can get without making it look like there’s muscle around him.”

“Aye.” Nimmes didn’t look happy about the decision. Then again, he hadn’t looked happy for the few days it took for them to get to Steinnback from Lundahn. The rest of the crew were preparing their way, and Madison was surprised not to see the usual crew of hustlers waiting for people to disembark.

Even more interesting, no one approached when she came off the ship with Ed, Nimmes, and Leopold in tow. Their weapons were on clear display to dissuade people interested in theft or violence, but Madison didn’t think it would be easy to force them away.

The hustlers usually made their money from sailors fresh off their ships and interested in spending some of their back pay, but the only people around were a few respectable vendors.

“Something’s wrong,” Madison muttered under her breath. “There should be a lot more workers in the area.
